IIHS REPORT ADDRESSES ‘FUEL ECONOMY V. SAFETY’ ISSUE

The current issue of IIHS’s Status Report wrestles with two important issues. Addressing government proposals for boosting fuel economy of SUVs, vans, and pickups, it says the proposals would “greatly reduce contradiction with safety” which occurs when vehicles downsized to meet fuel consumption control needs become less safe because of their smaller size. The newsletter also takes on a recent study by University of Georgia researchers claiming to that airbags are not reducing car crash deaths. IIHS researchers find the study to be grievously flawed.
