TAKATA BELT RULED DEFECTIVE IN HILO TRIAL

A Hawaii trial court has entered a $16.5 million judgment against Takata Corp. for allegedly manufacturing a seatbelt that resulted in paraplegia to a 26-year-old man when it failed to protect the occupant of a 1987 Nissan Pathfinder in an October 2000 crash, according to L.S. Sherman Consulting the suit alleged that the belt’s defect permitted the man to be thrown from the vehicle when it ran off the road, struck an embankment, and rolled over.
