IIHS WANTS NHTSA TO MOVE FASTER ON ITS ESC RULE DATE

A faster phase-in for the proposed new Federal auto stability system rules has been urged by the IIHS, according to a Detroit Free Press article IIHS reportedly told NHTSA that the benefits in lives saved by the rule were “too great too wait.” IIHS did not offer a specific effective-date plan in its comments to NHTSA.

As now structured, the electronic stability regulation would begin to phase in with the 2009 model year and would apply to all new vehicles starting in the 2012 model year. About 30 percent of new vehicles now have ESC as standard or optional equipment. NHTSA is taking comments on the plan through Nov. 17.
