Center for Auto Safety: CAS was founded in 1970 to "provide consumers a voice for auto safety and quality in Washington and to help lemon owners fight back across the country. CAS has a small budget but a big impact on the auto industry. With less than half what General Motors spends on a single Super Bowl commercial, CAS has taken on the auto giants and won for consumers." CAS's website offers current information across a range of issues.

Insurance Institute for Highway Safety: IIHS was created in the mid-1960s and is funded entirely by the auto casualty insurance industry. Its projects are directed at finding out "what works and doesn't work to prevent motor vehicle crashes in the first place and reduce injuries in the crashes that still occur. The Institute's research focuses on countermeasures aimed at all three factors in motor vehicle crashes (human, vehicular, and environmental) and on interventions that can occur before, during, and after crashes to reduce losses." Its companion organization, the Highway Loss Data Institute (HLDI), analyzes insurance claims data.
